London Hidden Gems – Shopping in Chiltern Street

By on 19/01/2017

Big city high streets

London is undoubtly a capital of fashion. Numerous boutiques catering to all tastes and lifestyles surround you anywhere you go. Even staying in remote parts of the city won’t leave you without options.

But the real kingdom of retail is the central area – hectic Oxford and Regent Streets neighbourhoods.

Global and British fast fashion brands have their outposts there, most of them are flagships, with broad selection of clothing, shoes, handbags, accessories, tempting with flashy window displays and affordable prices.

Tired? Make a detour

But if the crowds, laud music and massively produced attire is not your cup of tea, take few steps north, and discover quiet, elegant neigbourhood of Marylebone – right off Oxford Street.

You’ll find there one-of-a-kind boutiques, posh multibrands, calm atmosphere and impeccable experience of old-fashion shopping.

One of my favourites is Chiltern Street – if you pass Selfridges and turn into Duke or Orchard Street, 8 minutes later you’ll find yourself in a different world.

Let me give you few arguments to do this diversion:

Sweaters and cool ‘It’ knits adorned with iconic word designs have cult status among some of the worlds most stylish women. The Chiltern street boutique, filled with soft in touch and witty sweaters, as well as scented candles and fragrance, feels more like a private designer’s appartment than retail outpost. In her own words: “I wanted to create an intimate shopping experience with an apartment like feeling, a bit like stepping into a friend’s place for a cup of tea and leaving with her favourite jumper.”

Minimalist‘s paradise – no matter if you care about it in fashion only, or in your entire life. As the founder – Maria Lemos say – in a world of fast shopping, we want our customers to slow down, take time to look, touch, smell and enjoy beauty. Comfort, quality and design are what we look for as we travel – clothes that get better with time, jewellery that will last forever, and beauty products that will make every day special.

For Shoe Lovers

Crispins Shoes

Can you believe that back in the 1960s, when CRISPINS Shoes founder – Dawne Gutteridge – came to London from Canada, the shoe manufactures did not believe there was a market for fashionable quality shoes over size 8? Fortunately she decided to change it and now all ladies with larger size feet can shop there quality and well-designed footwear by the best producers from Italy, Spain, America and France.

If the information about the heritage and quality sounds to you like blah blah blah, maybe the fact that Cromford (f.k.a. General Leather Company) produced garments for an extensive portfolio of clients, including Margaret Howell, Mulberry, Daks and Holland & Holland will impress you… No? They also made attire for James Bond in Die Another Day and Captain America.

And the quality, and design, are really great, I promise!

A boxer brief is not the first thing coming to mind when you think about tailoring. However the whole brand Hamilton & Hare was built on this humble part of men’s wardrobe. More slimline, flattering cut has been called revolutionary to those in the know. But in the boutique you’ll find also mens leisurewear and other cosy basics.

I'm Bo - founder of ShopTrotter and BoldOld Blog I kind of like fashion - meaning: I like to look good, but spending too much time shopping is something that makes me feel overwhelmed. Besides of that - I have a walk-in closet full of wonderful stuff that I use once in 1-2 years... I know, it's outreagous! So I decided to start the Instagram account and try to reuse pieces I own for a long time, without compromising on fashion and style. My new motto is to re-create and re-cycle, instead of buying new stuff over and over. Now I shop consciously - buying only the items that complement my other clothes.
